‘Create an Online Magazine on Circular Economy and Sustainability’

Learning Goals:

Knowledge

  1. The participants will have the opportunity to learn about different aspects of circular economy and how it can be achieved, like reducing waste, reusing materials, recycling, and upcycling. A deeper understanding of how these practices contribute to sustainability and the importance of sustainability itself.
  2. Participants will gain knowledge of how clothing can have a big impact on the environment. They will understand the importance of reducing the consumption and waste of clothing and be familiar with practices that are aligned with the circular economy concept.
  3. The exposure to different examples of businesses and organizations implementing circular economy practices, will deepen the knowledge of participants with sustainable models.
  4. Critical and analytical thinking is developing through the awareness that the environment is at risk from things that don’t come to mind.
  5. The participants will gain some knowledge of the challenges that come from implementing circular economy practices.

Skills

  1. Communication and presentation skills are acquired, since participants present their magazine to others and also share their inputs and thoughts on the subject.
  2. Critical thinking skills were enhanced during the creation of the magazine, as they encountered the challenges they faced during the activity.
  3. Digital skills are gained by using platforms, creating digital content, inserting images, and ways of searching the internet.
  4. The gain of organizing skills and time management.
  5. Building team working skills, like being able to share their ideas, listen to others, coordinate and communicate effectively, to be able to work with others towards a common goal and demonstrate leading aspects of themselves.

Responsibilities

  1. Participants can take the responsibility of showing the magazine and even sharing it in on line platforms, so others could see it and become familiar with circular economy and how clothing can have a big impact on sustainability.
  2. Participants, using the knowledge they acquired in the training, should share and try to educate others in their community, at work, and with friends, about the importance of circular economy practices. Also, to begin to explain how clothing management is a vital matter towards sustainability.
  3. Their involvement in community projects and initiatives related to circular economy practices, using the ideas, experience, skills, and knowledge acquired from the training.
  4. Encouraging others for more sustainable clothing choices, like supporting brands that follow eco-friendly procedures.
  5. Promotion of recycling and upcycling in their communities, through various activities.
  6. Participants should be encouraged to continue their education and deepen their knowledge on the topic of circular economy related to sustainable clothing and even share their magazine in online groups and forums.
  7. Encourage participants to inspire others and motivate them to adopt sustainable clothing practices and implementing them in their community.

Learning objectives

  1. The understanding of the core principles of circular economy, like reducing waste, reusing, recycling, and upcycling, and how these principles contribute in an effective way to sustainability.
  2. The knowledge of how the clothing and fashion industry can play a significant role in sustainability, understanding the responsibility everyone should take in clothing consumption, recycling, and upcycling.
  3. Getting to know businesses and organizations that have implemented circular economy practices.
  4. Digital skills to be obtained, like the use of an online platform for the creation of the magazine, the creation of digital content, layout design, inserting images, and designing pages, skills that are vital in the digital world we live in.
  5. Teamwork and collaboration will be achieved, since the participants will have the chance to work with others, to share their thoughts and ideas, and to distribute tasks in order to achieve a common goal.
  6. Communication skills will be enhanced since the participants are asked to present their magazine to others.
  7. Environmental awareness will become apparent to the participants, through the impact that responsible clothing management could have, leading to the importance of sustainability.

Content / Methodology/Evaluation

Procedure:

  1. Explain the activity and its purpose: The creation of an online magazine that focuses on circular economy and sustainability, emphasizing the importance of reducing paper waste by utilizing digital platforms for their activity.
  2. Divide them into groups, ensuring each group has at least one individual with adequate knowledge and digital skills, and give them the following link in order to see an example of clothing sustainability called Fabric Republic: https://www.fabricrepublic.gr/en/
  3. Encourage participants to share their thoughts and questions on what they have read.
  4. Show them a video on clothing sustainability https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iKHr-JnWYA
  5. Encourage them to share their thoughts and questions and engage them in a discussion.
  6. Begin the procedure of the creation of the online magazine.
  7. Provide the participants with an appropriate program to create their magazine, take a few minutes to explain to them how it works, demonstrate it on the projector, and be available for questions, especially during the creation of the magazine.
  8. Explain what the magazine could include:
  • Name of the magazine that reflects the theme of circular economy and sustainability.
  • Up to 20 pages long.
  • Articles regarding the circular economy and how clothes can contribute to that principle
  • Examples of businesses and organizations that have implemented the idea of recycling and upcycling or any other idea that have adopted for helping the environment.
  • Relevant pictures and visuals.
  • Ideas on how communities can implement recycling, upcycling or any other sustainable practices.
  • Anything else they could think of that could enhance the magazine.
  1. Creation of the online magazine: Encourage the participants to collaborate with their peers in their group and feel free to share any thoughts, ideas, and suggestions they might have. The trainer should be available for any questions, suggestions, and whatever the participants need.
  2. Each group will present their magazine to the rest, including a brief overview of the magazine’s name and the content.
  3. Encourage participants to engage in a discussion regarding all the magazines they have been presented, their thoughts, and likes.
  4. Ask participants to share any challenges they might faced during the creation of the magazine.
  5. Encourage the participants to identify the knowledge they gained from this activity.
  6. Facilitate a conversation on how they feel comfortable and passionate enough to share their magazine with their peers at work, in their family, and in their community.

Methodology:

The teaching technique in this activity is “Project-Bases Learning”, focusing on active learning and creativity promoting environmental awareness. It enhances collaboration and teamwork, where participants are asked to work together in groups, and share their thoughts and ideas towards a common goal. It also provides a deeper knowledge of sustainable practices and in particular how clothing industry can contribute to that. This method combines practical skills with the opportunity presentation of the magazine and engaging in discussion.

Existing knowledge:

  1. The participants should have a basic understanding of recycling and upcycling and its benefits.
  2. Basic digital knowledge on how to use a computer and some participants be more educated in order to help others in the creation of the online magazine.
  3. Basic understanding of circular economy and its benefits.
  4. They should be open to exploring new ideas and concepts, in case they haven’t heard about clothing sustainability.

Limitations:

  1. Limited digital skills could be a barrier for some participants to execute some tasks in the activity, like using a computer, searching the internet, and using online tools.
  2. Different languages spoken can make the participants struggle with the activity.
  3. Presenting difficult or complex technical language could confuse some participants and make it difficult for them to follow the activity.
  4. Physical, mental or cognitive disabilities could affect participants ability to interact with others or with technology.
  5. Lack of confidence and self-doubt could lead some participants into isolation and not engaging interactively with others in the activity.
  6. Slow internet connection could slow down the procedure of creating the on- line magazine.
